Early Life

Dewey Francis Foley was born on October 10, 1916, in Windham, Connecticut. Dewey grew up in a family of farmers, and he developed an early interest in the natural sciences. After graduating from high school in 1932, Foley attended Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut.
At Wesleyan, Foley was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society and the Tau Beta Pi mathematical honor society. While at Wesleyan, Foley also served as the editor-in-chief of the school’s newspaper, The Argus.
After graduating from Wesleyan with a bachelor’s degree in 1938, Foley enrolled at Yale University to study mathematics. However, after only two months at Yale, Foley changed his major to zoology.
Foley received his doctorate degree in zoology from Yale in 1943. After receiving his doctorate degree, Foley joined the United States Marine Corps as a lieutenant colonel. He served in the Marine Corps for six years and retired as a brigadier general in 1965.
After retiring from the Marine Corps, Foley began teaching at Brown University. He served as the dean of Brown’s School of Arts and Sciences from 1973 to 1985.
